Telangana Formation Day: A Historical Journey

On June 2, 2014, the state of Telangana was officially born, becoming the 29th and youngest state in the Union of India. Let’s delve into the history and the movement that led to the formation of Telangana.

History of Telangana: From Hyderabad State to Independence

  1. Hyderabad State: Before its transformation into Telangana, the region was known as Hyderabad State. It gained independence from the rule of the Nizam and merged with India in 1948.
  2. States Reorganisation Committee (SRC): In the pursuit of creating states based on linguistic lines, the SRC recommended the merger of Telangana with Andhra Pradesh on November 1, 1956. This merger was accompanied by the signing of the “Gentleman’s Agreement,” which aimed to safeguard Telangana’s interests.
  3. Challenges and Violations: Despite the agreement, Telangana faced challenges. Employees from Andhra who migrated to Hyderabad were recognized as local residents after 12 years, diverting government jobs meant for Telangana residents. Additionally, funds allocated for Telangana were diverted to the Andhra region between 1956 and 1968.

The Telangana Movement: A Quest for Statehood

  1. Unsatisfied with the Gentleman’s Agreement: Social groups, students, and government employees initiated a movement to create a separate state, Telangana. They felt that the Gentleman’s Agreement had been violated in areas such as jobs, education, and budget allocation.
  2. Vashishta Bhargava Committee’s Report: The committee revealed that 4,500 employees were working against the Gentleman’s Agreement. Furthermore, ₹283 million allocated for Telangana had been diverted to Andhra.

Formation of Telangana: A New Beginning

  1. Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS): In 2001, the TRS was formed with Kalvakuntla Chandrashekhar Rao (popularly known as KCR) as its head. Their sole agenda was to create Telangana with Hyderabad as its capital.
  2. Elections and Statehood: In the first assembly elections held in April 2014, the TRS emerged victorious, securing a majority. KCR became the first Chief Minister of Telangana, marking the culmination of a long journey toward statehood12.

As Telangana steps into its 10th year, it continues to evolve, facing both challenges and opportunities. The road ahead promises further growth and development for this young state3. 🌟
